is a fictional character, a superhero vampire hunter in the Marvel
Comics universe. Created by writer Marv Wolfman and penciller Gene
Colan, his first appearance was in the comic book The Tomb of Dracula
as a supporting character.
Blade grew up living at Madame Vanity's, and at age nine, returning
home from school one December, he saw an old man being attacked by
three vampires. Blade helped the old man, who used a silver cane to
kill the vampires and fight off the attackers. The man was Jamal Afari,
a jazz trumpeter and vampire-hunter who then moved into Madame Vanity's
and trained the young Blade in both music and combat. Blade was soon
able to defeat many of the weak, younger vampires that he and Afari
found in abundance. Blade became an Olympic-level athlete and a
formidable hand-to-hand combatant, with an expertise in edged weapons
such as knives and daggers.
Blade films are based on the fictional Marvel Comics character of the
same name, portrayed by Wesley Snipes. They were written by David S.
Goyer, Marv Wolfman, and Gene Colan, directed by Stephen Norrington,
Guillermo del Toro and David S. Goyer, respectively and distributed by
New Line Cinema.
The character was created in 1973 for Marvel Comics by writer Marv
Wolfman and artist Gene Colan and was a supporting character in the
1970s comic Tomb of Dracula. In the comic, Blade's mother was bitten by
a vampire while she was in labor with Blade. Thus, Blade was born as a
dhampir, a human with vampire genes.
After being framed for murder by the
vampires he's sworn to destory, Blade himself becomes the hunted.
Captured by the vampire-corrupted police, he is soon released by a
group of fellow vampire hunters known as the Nightstalkers. Upon
Blade’s release, Nightstalkers' Hannibal King and Abigail
Whistler, the daughter of Blade’s former mentor, invite the
Daywalker to take up arms alongside them against the vampire leader
Danica Talos. Unbeknownst to them, Danica has a secret weapon of her
own to take down the human race - the freshly resurrected Dracula.
