Western Theme

- The Western genre, particularly in films, often portrays the conquest of the wilderness and the subordination of nature in the name of civilization or the confiscation of the territorial rights of the original inhabitants of the frontier. The Western depicts a society organized around codes of honor and personal, direct or private justice rather than any rationalistic, abstract law, in which persons have no social order larger than their immediate peers, family, or perhaps themselves alone. The popular perception of the Western is a story that centers on the life of a semi-nomadic wanderer, usually a cowboy or a gunfighter.
In some ways, such protagonists may be considered the literary descendants of the knight errant which stood at the center of an earlier extensive genre. Like the cowboy or gunfighter of the Western, the knight errant of the earlier European tales and poetry was wandering from place to place on his horse, fighting villains of various kinds and bound to no fixed social structures but only to his own innate code of honor. And like knights errant, the heroes of Westerns frequently rescue damsels in distress.

ImageUnforgiven

UnforgivenUnforgiven is a 1992 Western film which was produced and directed by Clint Eastwood with the screenplay written by David Webb Peoples. The film tells the story of William Munny, an aging and retired gunslinger who takes on one more job years after he had hung up his guns and turned to farming. A dark Western that deals frankly with the uglier aspects of violence and the myth of the Old West, it stars Eastwood in the lead role, along with Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris, Jaimz Woolvett, Saul Rubinek and Frances Fisher. Eastwood dedicated the movie to former directors and mentors Don Siegel and Sergio Leone. The film won four Academy Awards including Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Hackman), Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Picture.

ImageTrue Women

True WomenThe story starts when young Euphemia Ashby (Tina Majorino) and young Georgia Lawshe (Rachel Leigh Cook) are by the creek playing when a rider rushes by. When they get back to the house they find out that the rider has told Georgia's parents that Phemie's father is dead. So Phemie's brother-in-law Bartlett comes to take Phemie to Texas to live with him and Phemie's sister Sarah.

ImageLawman

Lawman
Lawman is a 1971 American Western film starring Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Lee J. Cobb, and Robert Duvall. The film is about the quest of a lone peace officer, Marshal Jered Maddox (played by Lancaster), to bring several men to justice. It was written by Gerald Wilson and directed by Michael Winner. Its hero and the motives of the other characters are not as defined or clear-cut as in some westerns. Cobb's character, Vincent Bronson, is not a typically evil cattle baron but is portrayed with a sense of humanity. The marshal and the guilty men nevertheless come to a series of deadly confrontations. In the end, Maddox is an anti-hero who betrays his own code of honor. The plot generates questions regarding honor and under what circumstances murder becomes legal.

ImageThe Unforgiven

The UnforgivenThe Unforgiven is an American western film released in 1960. The film was directed by John Huston and starred Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, Audie Murphy, Charles Bickford and Lillian Gish. The story was based upon a novel by Alan Le May. An old man, Abe Kelsey (Joseph Wiseman), claims that a member of a thriving frontier family, Rachel Zachary (Audrey Hepburn), is actually a Native American, secretly adopted as a child. Rachel's true brother and a gang of Kiowas return to claim her, saying that she is one of their own, stolen in a raid. The dispute results in the rest of the whites turning their backs on the Zacharys when the truth is revealed by the matriarch, Mattilda Zachary (Lillian Gish). Ben Zachary (Burt Lancaster)(who is in love with Rachel, with Rachel feeling the same way) tries to defend the family, but Cash (Audie Murphy), his hotheaded brother, is unable to deal with his "sister" being a "red-hide Indian." He leaves, but returns to help them fight off an Indian raid, during which Rachel commits a violent act, thus choosing sides once and for all.

ImageThe Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert FordThe Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a 2007 Western drama film adapted from Ron Hansen's 1983 novel of the same name. The film is directed by Andrew Dominik, with Brad Pitt portraying Jesse James and Casey Affleck as Robert Ford. Filming took place in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. Initially intended for a 2006 release, the film was postponed and re-edited for a September 21, 2007 release. While the film contains representations of historical figures, it notably dramatizes the relationship between James and Ford.

ImageTexas Rangers

Texas RangersAfter McNelly and his men pursue Fisher for a while, they fall into a trap, where many of the young and ill-trained rangers are killed. Defeated and low on morale the men fall back to a ranch house and attempt to set up an ambush for Fisher. After being double crossed by a mexican woman (perhaps unwittingly) the rangers remain one step behind Fisher and his men. Two of the rangers follow Fisher and his men to the Mexican border, where they wait for the rest of their company. Once the entire Ranger company arrives at the Mexican border they plan their final attack. In a final gun slinging show down the Rangers face off against Fisher and his men.

ImageOpen Range

Open RangeFour cattlemen band together in the last days of the Wild West to protect a small province from a villainous land baron. Writer-director-producer Kevin Costner co-stars with Robert Duvall as two of the veteran cowboys. Annette Bening plays the nurse who catches Costner's eye, and Michael Gambon is the rancher determined to create and preside over a lawless state.

ImageThe Tracker
